ON DISPLAY:
“Art Classes for Uncreative People” Group Show
This exhibition showcases work created during the “Art Classes for Uncreative People” workshop series, a program designed for adults and high school students who may not see themselves as artists. Led by Kai Schulz, the series encouraged participants to explore drawing techniques, art history, and creative expression through guided lessons and open-ended experimentation.
Each piece in this show represents the unique journey of its creator—whether they attended a single workshop or participated throughout the series. The works on display reflect exploration in figure drawing, still life, and conceptual self-portraits, demonstrating that creativity is not a fixed trait but a skill that can be nurtured with time, practice, and curiosity.
This exhibition celebrates the participants’ growth and willingness to step beyond their comfort zones. We invite you to see the world through their eyes—and perhaps reconsider what it means to be “uncreative,” if it means anything at all.
“Portrait of Tyler” Show
By: Kai Schulz
Using the same techniques that I taught in the NHCC “Art Classes for Uncreative People” workshops, I have created portraits of my partner, Tyler. The drawings are made with various types of low quality materials, like pens, pencils, newsprint, and notebook paper. I began most of the drawings by mapping out significant anatomical points and then following the delicate contour lines that reveal an individual’s physical qualities. By drawing the same subject repeatedly over time, the simple technical exercises become a drawing series imbued with meaning. Without needing any “creativity” or expensive materials, the portraits of Tyler through my eyes and hand also become self-portraiture that archive my relationship to him.
UPCOMING:
Workshops take place during Open Studio Nights 6:30-8:30pm, unless otherwise noted.
